Mini Cooper S R53 rough idle

Postby lfc200 » Sat Jan 31, 2015 4:59 pm

Hi All,

I purchased a 2005 cooper s during the week. During test drive no evidence of a rough idle but noticed yday sitting in traffic that the car was idleing at around 1250rpm and would surge upto about 1500rpm and drop again to 1250rpm. This would continue in circles...
Anyone any ideas for possible causes for this???

Many thanks
John

There are a few things you can check , have a look at all vacuum pipes and air intake seals , if its intermittent it may be a temp sensor , a quick diagnostic session will find the problem , oh and best of luck with your new purchase . if I can help further give me a shout ,

Thanks for coming back to me! You're based in Ballincollig yourself aren't you?
I'm only in the road in Frankfield, but pass through Ballincollig every day to and from work! Could I arrange to drop into you some afternoon?

Where are you living Jordan? Not a mechanic but perhaps we can stick our heads together.

I'm in South Dublin. Just had a full service done. Sparks, coils and oils changed. Its helped greatly. But still the occasional shudder. My mechanic said he thinks it's normal from such a small engine with so much power. From my research a huge amount of mini owners have had the same answers from specialists. So something we may have to live with.

If it's paticularly bad chack the pins on your coil pack. If any are rusted change it out. Same with plugs, it will greatly improve things

That with respect is a load of Bo**ix , there is no reason there should be a stutter big engine or small . without driving the car its difficult to diagnose but there are other reasons beside ignition components you may have the stutter/ misfire . also the mapping in the standard S is abysmal as it has to cope with temperatures of +40 to - 40 and petrol with octane ratings from 85 to 101 and MINI have just 1 fuel/ ign map . is your problem when pulling away from a junction ? or in 'cruise' mode ? is it under 'load' conditions ie when accelerating ? what mileage is on the car ? do you know what spark plugs were used ? is the car showing any fault codes ? has anyone got any 'live' data to determine the problem ?
