New Cooper 35 Classic Mini

Postby ID » Thu Jul 20, 2006 8:50 am

Hi... Just thought I'd post up some pics of my recently acquired 1996 Cooper 35. A big thanks to Gerard for helping me get the car and putting up with my endless questions :)

The Cooper 35 holds good memories for me as it was my first car back in 1998 and got me really hooked on mini's so it seemed fitting to get one and try to hold on to it 8)

I think the Cooper 35 LE model is the most beautiful Mini produced after they discontinued 10" wheels. Almond Green is a beautiful colour -- retro but not silly-looking, and the black minilights look way better than the normal ones (although obviously not as nice as the plastic hubcaps on my Sprite!). Love those arches too, and the lack of bonnet stripes.

Congratulations, I'm very very jealous!

Are you going to keep it exactly as standard? Much rust? Have you checked your headlamp bezel rings yet :)

Please don't change the indicator lenses though -- I saw a Cooper 35LE in a magazine once with clear lenses and it looked horrible -- completely not in keeping with the rest of the car
(having said that I don't like clear lenses in general -- remind me of a Honda Civic, but I know some people think they're class!)

When I win the lotto I want my mini to look exactly like yours!

Cheers guys...

The car has undergone a full respray so no external rust and since it will be garaged I hope to keep it that way :) My plan is to get the suspension sorted and and maybe a few engine tweeks by Gerard if I can bring myself to drive it doen to Cork :)

I actually quite like the clear front indicators, but I much prefer the standard rear cluster  so I'll wait and see...

This is pic of my old one :)

love the wheels, but they could do with being refurbed if possible I might try and source a new set 8)

Looks brilliant Ian , Keep it standard looking with a few tweaks on engine and brakes / suspension and You will have a very serious 'fun car' .

I had though of going for a wavy style grill with just the clear front indicators  ;) ...apart from that it will be standard looking from the outside and in... maybe put in a black leather roll top on the dash and maybe a CD player... don't have any tapes anymore

I've got a few sump guards I got with a previous classic that never got fitted, so one of those might also make it onto the car, but don't count on it :)

I bought it in Bristol and drove it to Glasgow where it stayed for a year until I moved back over here where I sold it to a guy who turned up in a 1980 Porsche 911 8) ... I saw it a few time around Belfast after that but it obviously didn't do many miles after I sold it in 2000 with over 20k on the clock... it wasn't perfect then either... recon gearbox and some filler and paintwork on the door where some git tried to break in and steal my stereo

Good to have another one though :D

Lovely car - Keep it standard, its cheaper that way! I have a Paul Smith that is totally standard apart from the radio and I feel guilty that it was changed. I'm not saying I don't like modified Minis just that something as rare as yours or even a Paul Smith is best left alone.

I have the same wheels on my Paul Smith and they could do with a tidy up as well but want to retain the originals if possible.

I recently came across the Reg. of my original Mini - 1979 Special in Silver and I'd jump at the chance to buy it if it hasn't rusted away to nothing by now.

Three mini's!!!... very nice  ... the Paul Smith is another favorite of mine 8) what condition are your wheels??.. and have they been refurbed??

Any mods I do will be very subtle and easily reversible... just nice to have some fun with it :)

Well, 3 for now, the Mayfair is going soon as I don't have the space any more.

My PS wheels have some light kerbing, scrapes really, around the outer edge. I'm being fussy more than anything. I might get them done this winter depending on the funds situation after a gearbox refurb, a new driver's A-panel and a bonnet respray. :?
