New head unit - self install R50

Postby eas » Wed Dec 03, 2008 4:08 pm

Hi all,

took matters into my own hands and replaced my wave head unit today.

Have to say it was VERY easy after all. Took about an hour from start to finish and that included some time just getting organized.

Followed these instructions from newministuff (thanks Mike)

http://www.newministuff.com/new/index.p ... 13&diyid=6

anyhow, here's the result -

Sound wise the difference is incredible.

For anyone installing an Alpine HU - note that they seem to use a different antenna adapter than the normal ISO one. Not sure exactly what the story is, but I'm without FM until I figure it out.

Next on the list : bigger job of installing new component speakers and amplifier. Much research to do.

DIN to ISO converter is what you need for the FM but for the life of me I can't remember which way round it needs to be ? - I had an Alpine fitted to my old Cooper and needed to do the same thing. I'm sure Owen will know which is needed though! ;)

It's not the Alpine's fault, it's actually the MINI. MINI do not use a ISO standards for wiring, or antennaes, so to fit the Alpine head unit, you would need a loom adapter, and an antennae adaptor too.

Mikey the MINI sells both :)

thanks guys.

I do have the standard ISO antennae adapter, but the alpine seems to have something else on it's end...?

I think this may be something new for Alpine.

Alpine are brilliant and many have iPod compatibility , I fitted one to Sineads cabriolet and its excellent , not sure if there are any pics around but I will have a look , should be able to get a decent price as well if you need one .

Thanks for editing the pic Owen..
Yip i have the climate control its a great job, and elec folding mirrors too as a little added extra.
Ya this is a great unit and the difference in sound was noticable from the first time i turned it on..
the main reason for this particular one was the handsfree for the i phone, CD`s are no longer required so that frees up the glove box...and under the passenger seat.....and on the back seat, they were bloody everywhere... :)

Would highly recomend this..
