Someone butchered my engine...Please help!

Postby oisindoyle123 » Tue Mar 30, 2010 11:25 pm

I recently bought a 96 rover mini cooper. I dont know much about engines and the car seemed fine so I bought it. But after some inspection by a mechanic it seems that the computer and injection system were pulled out and replaced by a distributor cap and a carb, and for some reason the catalytic converter was removed. I've now been told that this system will more than likely fail the emissions test in the NCT even though the rest of the car is mechanically fine. If anyone can help or advise me on this i'd be seriously grateful. I'm not opposed to buying the parts to go back to the original injection system as a catalytic converter and an ECU seem to be easily available. I'm just wondering how easy or difficult it would be to do this and if anyone knows someone who specialises in such a job. Thanks for any help :)

Hi there Oisin, that's a shocking discovery.. Sorry to hear that. Where are you in the country? Can the car be driven? It'd be worth getting in touch with an expert here on the forum he's over ** years experience in Mini/MINI's. He can advice you best. Good luck with it. Oops, the expert is Irlmin, give him (Ger) a shout!

Yeah, its driving fine, you wouldn't really know that anything like that had been carried out until you look under the bonnet. The mechanic says it'll pass the NCT with no problems other than the emissions. I've mailed irlmin now, thanks a million for that.

Thats the second person I've heard of that happening too. Not sure if it was on here or elsewhere. Where are you based and did you buy the car private or from a specialist.

I'm from Carlow, i bought it privately, apparently it can be sorted out though, just a matter of getting the parts which i'll hopefully be sorting tonight :) Its annoying really because it makes no difference to the way the car drives, its still a little bullet, the only problem is the emissions and I blame the enviroment for that, i think it needs to harden up a bit.
