Coolant not cool!

Postby Jennifereckles » Thu Oct 14, 2010 12:43 pm

Hi guys!

Bought an 07 Mini One back in May and have had to replace/top up coolant tank about 6 times since then!! Brought it to a certified Mini Service centre (thinking...its a mini, they must be able to fix it!) but no joy!

They did a pressure check in the cooling system, added dye and checked for leaks but nothing came up!

They gave me no advice on what to do next or what the problem might be except saying that they would be glad to take it back in if the engine overheated again for another pressure check and of course charge me another 120e for the privilege!

All the same, just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem or if anyone can guide me as to what to do next!!

Thanks

Is there any other symptom ie overheating ? its basically as a result of a pressure build-up which could be caused by several things , What were the results of the pressure test ? a leak would cause the opposite problem with no pressure being allowed to build-up , Where are you based ? I ask because we run a specialist Mini and MINI workshop in Cork and would be happy to have a look for you .

Thanks for your reply!

Yeah, the problem actually first came to my attention because the engine was overheating. Realised after that that the heating wasnt working either.

They wouldnt give me the inspection report, only an invoice stating what they had done and the fact that there was no problem!

If it was just a pressure build up could they have fixed it by draining the coolant system? the heating is working fine tonight but don't know how long that will last for!

Unfortunately i'm based in dublin...have heard wonderful things about the workshop in Cork but is a bit far for the moment!

Could have been a air lock in the heater core if the heater was not working or a leak in it. MIght be worth lifting the carpet to see if its damp in there. Anyway sounds like they have fixed it without telling you exactely what was wrong? If not a 2 hour journey to Cork will solve your problem for sure.

Hi Guys!

Thanks for all your help!!

the guys at the garage are now saying its my water pump and it needs to be replaced!

Just wondering if that sounds like its in line with my problem? Probably bring paranoid at this stage but not ready to fork out €505 and still have a problem!

Thanks again!

I would make it clear you are not paying for them to experiment with things until they get it right , there are ways to check for coolant leaks that they should have tried ages ago .there should be a visible leak from the pump and we use some liquid in the coolant which can be detected with UV light and the leak is usually visible .
