Crunchy gearbox

Postby seanmitchell » Wed Dec 08, 2010 4:44 pm

hi im new to the mini world. just bought a 2000 mini cooper there in august and it has crunch in second gear. done a bit of research on it but still not sure exactly what to do. it crunches going from first into second but more so when you come down from third into second.iv gotten used to it now and i just change gear slowly going into second and it doesnt crunch but just takes a second or two for it to slot in. just wondering if i need to get it reconditioned or is it ok to keep driving as is? never once poped out of any gear and the only crunch is in second, but i change slowly so it doesnt crunch......any advise would be greatly appreciated!! thanks

Hi there Sean and Welcome to the forum :)

Basically the syncro's are worn in your gearbox and it needs to be rebuilt.
The longer you leave this the mote damage is caused to the gearbox but Also to the Engine!!! As the classic Mini uses the same oil for the engine and gearbox, the shards of metal from the worn syncro rings will go up into the engine and do damage sadly :(
Where are you based?
There is an excellent Mini and MINI specialist here in Cork who do everything Mini and also can rebuild your gearbox.
Ger from O'Leary's Garage is the contact on 086-8663828

I don't but to be honest Ger has customers coming down to him from Dublin, Galway Limerick etc etc on a regular basis and some only for just services!
As the old saying goes....Do it right, Do it once ;)
Very few people 'understand' classic Mini's so as I say if it was me I'd come across from UK for the expertise they have ;)
