New signup procedure

Postby Owen » Fri Jul 10, 2009 3:26 pm

Due to spammers (Real people signing up, creating profiles and then spamming the Forum) today, I've locked our Forum for new users. Anyone signing up now will have to have their membership online approved by me before they can post.

It won't affect any existing users, and any new users will have to wait about 1-3 hours until I activate their accounts.

Update : For some reason, people can still signup. There may be a bit of spam on the forum while I'm away from the computer. I'll delete it when I'm back so no need to panic. As soon as we get the new signup system up and running, it'll eliminate all of this.

Right, just spent 45 minutes scanning the member list and there were some dodgy ip/emails/members on the list that had joined recently. These such members have been removed permanently. Note that some will carry on trying to register for the time being but shouldnt be able to post.

Ive banned most of the ip's that were coming through, one actually logged on as i was cleansing the list, so they were banned instantly ;)

I find, compared to my essentialmini forum, that once you clear out the baddies, they usually give up and go elsewhere, but i will monitor this as much as possible to stop this happening in future.

Ive just seen the extent of the problem, and it is quite severe. Ive deleted all the spammers and the dodgy posts. Ive got some new code to implement, but cant do it straight away. Will get it done asap.
