Getting wed in Ireland

Postby Rakey » Tue Dec 18, 2007 2:42 am

Ok, some of you know it but I recently got engaged, yes I finally did something that really shocked people and myself.

Anyway, its a fair way off, but we are thinking of getting wed in 2009, May is being looked at as a date, but undecided yet.

But the location is something I thought that some of you might be able to help with as we are 99% sure its going to be in Ireland.

Her family are in Newcastle, but we don't want to restrict it where her family are, oh and she is a Belfast girl not Newcastle, as being that close might mean inviting too many relatives, and it is going to be a small affair, not huge. ;)

Ideally needs to be accessible to an airport, so say about half an hour, but if there is an awesome venue then we wouldn't dismiss it for making other peoples lives easier

North coast of Donegal is being thought of as an area, as we both love Donegal.

Ok, so what we looking for, not over the top, its not a pantomine show wedding, its a special occasion, something we don't want to forget ourselves, we are not out to impress others, but would like it to be something that very us. Oh and she is very like me ;)

We're thinking hog roast, good food and beers, ceili, then a band for the evening party (Owen, what you got planned in 2009?).

Is that a wide enough brief? So links to anything you guys think we should consider or look at please. Oh and don't worry I am sure I'll be asking for more help again in the future from people like Gerard who is the best at negotiating for parties :)

Oh and does anyone know if we need a special license to get wed in Ireland as its not part of the UK, so we suspect there is some rules on that?

I will have a chat to You when I next see You Martin and I am sure We can 'do' a good wedding .venue will be the biggest problem as Wedding venues are traditionally booked out for years ahead ,but I think if You think 'outside the box' something can be sorted also 09 is sufficient time . as regards licences I will have to check that one , talk soon .

It's "ceili".

Aiden could probably help you out with Donegal venues. Lord knows his lawn is big enough. I'm sure there's enough fertilizer thrown about here that he could have the grass looking spectacular by May 09.

Any one else thinking what I'm thinking ---

MTI - 2009/Rakey's Wedding. We could call it the "Hell Freezes Over Tour"

  :P

Cheers for the correct spelling Jimbo ;)

I was thinking more that maybe MTI09 is the stag do?

I'm waiting on Uncle Aiden to pop his head in here and give us a hand too :)

Off the top of my head, 3 hotels spring to mind - now maybe you don't really fancy a hotel, in which case, I'll investigate further :)

North Coast - http://www.carltonredcastle.ie/

Brand new hotel close to here - probably not booked up yet - just opened last weekend - fantastic setting, old restored castle. http://www.solislougheskecastle.ie/?src ... heskehotel

And this one, my brother and Denises two sisters and brother got married here, its going to be overshadowed by the new solis hotel, but still great good and super rooms. http://www.harveyspoint.com/

This might need a phone call :p

License shouldn't be a problem in N Ireland...but as for the South?? Fecked if I know

Basically there are places springing up all over the place where you can actually have the ceremony eg Bushmills distillery!!!, carrick a reed rope bridge, Giants causeway....and any amount of hotels

(well don't take it as read any of the above places do carry out the ceremony).....but basically if the management have the appropriate license then you can do it anywhere outside of a church in N Ireland.

More wacky places springing up every week!

Some reception links here

OK so I have done a wee bit of digging, and as of Nov this year; here are all the approved venues to actually hold a civil service in N Ireland:

http://www.groni.gov.uk/Publication/911200773057.pdf
Bushmills isn't on it By the way Rakey! :( ;)
Though there were places that I know have held weddings that are not included - maybe it wasn't worth the hastle to them? :?

You can hold service and the have a reception elsewhere or some of the venues you can do the whole shebang!

I suppose you need to look at Airports and distances:

City of Derry , Belfast International, Belfast City, Dublin, Shannon, Cork, Kerry, Knock!?

Cheers guys, some great stuff to start us off, and yes Barry airport access needs to be fairly possible please, say about half an hour I think is what Jo said, but maybe a bit more and it might stop more of the Brits coming over

Too right, otherwise it will be too big, and we want it personal, not a fecking circus show where you need a huge tent!

Oh and we've just booked our tickets to Cork, so we can let the girls chat about it then while we stand in the bar ;)
