Surge protector not of much use if it hits the phone line!

Happened me a few years back !

Blew the main BT socket of the wall, wrecked the eithernet card on my old lappy (fortunately the lappy was OK) and also wrecked a brand new Dialer unit on my house alarm.
Bought a surge protector with phone connector to protect the new alarm dialer only to find that it's useless against phoneline strikes!
