Holiday Ideas

Postby Starrywalsh » Sat Feb 09, 2008 9:18 pm

Anybody recommend anywhere nice?? We went to St.Lucia last year, it was a good holiday, but the traveling killed us. Cork to London with Ryanair (worlds worst airline) London to St.Lucia, on the way back we were hanging around airports for 24hours, I was thinking flying Waterford - Manchester this time , Manchaster to Somewhere nice!!

Anybody recommend somewhere good?

If You like motoring have a look at the west coast of USA , we did LA , San Fransisco , Yosemite , Vegas , Grand Canyon , San Diego , 2 years ago and it was mad , long distances but worth it if You like driving , We took in a bit of Route 66 as well .We did that in a Cooper S cabriolet .Flights with Aer Lingus Dublin --LAX though Dublin -San Fransisco is available now . We normally do motoring trips to Europe last year it was UK ( taking in Nicky and Derek's run ) from Hull to Rotterdam overnight Ferry and then down to Austria through Germany a trip around the Austrian alps and Sud Tirol then back up to the Ring for a few days daftness , then home through the UK . We have done the Ireland France Ferry thing as well down through France to the Alps then down into Italy and all along the Cote D'azur to the Spanish border then up into Andorra in the Pyrenees and home via the west Coast of France , in the Classic Cabriolet ! that was an epic . I don't really like going to 1 spot for 2 weeks I would crack up !! need to be driving , My Brother is just back fromn a few weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia He hired a Hi-lux and headed off out into the wilds , and says its an amazing place . it really depends on what you like and want from a holiday .

I'd go with the Californian coast anytime......

we are making the effort to go every five years, taking in Las Vegas of course....... if you get to San Diego, don't forget to call and see Jim :)

Vienna is good too....if you get a cheap flight.... the city was amazing and the teashops were ace.... the whole place felt very safe too 8)

Although I think I would like the America Fly Drive I dont think it would go down well with herslef, plus I would not be able to drink 8O I usually have a place picked by now and booked, but it seems like if you wait a bit you can pick up a Bargin..... Hannah went to Egypt for a week in Dec ALL INCLUSIVE for €250 8O

Depends what you want out of the holiday..

For something quiet, relaxing, good weather - how about Portugal?

Not the teenage-boozey beaches,

but fly into Lisbon, Aerlingus from Dublin, very cheap these days (from 29 each way), get a car for a week or two, travel west to Sintra on the coast, fab, quiet, relaxing spot.
From there head west towards Monsaraz, fab fortified medieval village near the Spanish border, and situated on top of a hill, with fantastic 360 degree views! Double rooms from €50 a night http://www.priceline-europe.com/

Another place to check out is Marvão, similar, and more to the south, again check priceline europe of €50 a night double rooms !

Tavira in the south, in the Algarve is a personal favourite place of mine... A total chill out place, great weather, no-one to bother you, just walk the old streets, watch the old men play chess on the corner and forget about your mortgage and bills etc at home!!

Rent a villa in Faro, and fly home to Cork/ Dublin from Faro.

Something a bit adventurous & Fab weather - Try Slovenia

Ryanair fly to Maribor ( 2nd city), and from there get a car and drive along the fab motorway system, head for the alps for snowboarding (within season), or mountain biking in the Triglav National Park, White water rafting on the Soča River (3rd cleanest river in the world! - its amazingly clear!!), Skydive over Lake Bled, Paragliding, Canyoning.. etc etc etc

Check www.3glav-adventures.com

Rafting on the Soca River!

Both trips are fantastic in their own ways, I've done both, and they can actually be a cheap holiday!!

These are some pics that I have on a website, but check images.google.com for pictures for any of the places I outlined above!

Starry,

Those are some cracking pictures, looks like a bunch of places I'm going to have to add to my someday list.

8) 8) 8) 8)

Sparkie,

There's lots of fun places in So Cal too. Mountains, beaches, Disney, Hollywood, etc. I'm a 3 hour drive south of LAX. Talk to Ger.

Derek--when are you & the family coming over here again?

Sparkie we found a nice place in portugal last year! Lagos pronounces Largosh - I think .
Old town with loads of wee cove beachs, pretty much untouched and not comercialised like most of the rest of the Algarve!
