Mobile broadband

Postby Owen » Tue Jul 08, 2008 5:45 pm

Just curious if anyone's using a USB broadband modem from the likes of Vodafone/3/o2? I'm moving house next week, and it's a 6 month lease, so there's no point in getting dedicated broadband installed as they all have a minimum 12 month contract. I'm looking specifically at 3's 3Pay broadband, which works out at 25 quid a month, and using some naughty tech, I'll be able to repeat it across the house to other machines, etc.

Opinions?

I’ve got Vodafone Broadband and if I’m to be honest I find it rubbish… It just has not got good enough coverage… In saying that I’m covering some remote parts down south…

Give BT a call, they’ll give you a 6 month contract if you put pressure on them, It’s hard to better a landline with 2 or 3MB. Also if you already had a line you will not be subject to the full €140 connection charge.

Mobile broadband is fine for remote access but only for remote access!

If you want to borrow my modem for a weekend please feel free to take it away...

Theres no landline in the house, so putting one in is not an option for me Pat. I'll have it permenantly sitting in Rochestown so coverage is not an issue for me either. I'm going to get 3's one, it has a 14 day moneyback option, so if its really bad, I'll just cancel it.

Did a quick Google on 3's broadband. There are literally hundreds of pages on some bulletin boards with complaints, poor speeds, useless for the likes of youtube and skype, disconnecting, and they restrict the actual services you can use to web browsing only. So, if like me, you admin some sites like here, or you want to use other protocols other than the web (ftp, smtp, vnc), you're plumb out of luck.

Tried Googling vodafone for their quality of service but nothing came up. I'm all at sea now again ... only way I guess is to physically load the laptop into the car on Saturday and trapse to both the 3 store, and the vodafone store to try it out for myself. And before anyone suggests o2, they don't like me since I was a student and ran up a huge bill :)

Wouldn't mind that Alvie, wouldn't need the laptop, only the modem.

I decided to go with o2 broadband, because they have the same 10 gig plan as 3, but have 7.2Mbps connection instead of a 3.6. They're also 20 Euros a month, and I'm typing it this using the modem right now. It seems fast enough for browsing, haven't tried to download anything yet, or use Skype, but so far it isn't bad. I've 30 days to try it out and see what it's like anyway. Thanks for the input everyone!
