Totally agree. Myself and Ger were in his Clubman heading towards Wilton the other day. There were 3 lanes, and 7 cars were all in the overtaking lane, and the two other lanes were empty. The mind boggles.

:1icon_eek: To be honest, i've found that when i go South, the more abuse of the Overtaking lane is seen.. and a refresher course in overtaking & proper lane usage is something that should be compulsory! Remember many people got their full licences by never travelling using slow lanes, motorways etc. . . Don't get me started! lol.. I did ask a Cork Person (they know who they are) why they wouldn't move into the slow lane after using the fast lane to overtake, they just shrugged?!!

Brilliant Owen!
Sorry Siobhan, but I have to disagree with you! :1icon_eek:
It's a nationwide problem!!!!!! Last time I drove to work, I was in the driving lane coming home, and I undertook everything in the overtaking lane!

Thats what the problem, people think it's a fast lane. As we all know here (Siobhan's mystery person exempted!) it's not, it is called an overtaking lane.

We will continue to have this problem, until people realise that little fact!

Ah nationwide is worse!! Disagree that's no prob, i like a good argument/discussion!! Is it not illegal to overtake from driving to overtaking lane? My mystery person knows who they are, and i'll guard their privacy, i never hang anyone out to dry, just give them the string if they want it! Yes ...... that little fact causes more accidents, road rage etc. I won't mention the lack of use of indicators!!

We had a dispute about about this in a taxi coming up the M1 returning from a work trip
The taxi was sitting in the overtaking lane, the driver was taking to us, and as a result his speed kept dropping below 70
Eventually the guy behind overtook on the inside. Majority said he was wrong, only one other guy agreed with me that he was right.
Say I'm driving along merrily at 70 in the LHLane, and I approach some D**k doing 60 in the overtaking lane......am I expected to drop my speed from 70 to 60 in order to stay behind this guy????

That's true Barry.

There is an exemption that you can undertake cars while travelling in the driving lane, if you are at a speed greater than those in the overtaking lane. Which, in general, is ALL THE TIME!!!!!

I was curious on this one & the law states you should only use the overtaking to overtake then pull back in... If someone is determined to stay in the overtaking lane & drive say at 60kmh, you are NOT allowed overtake them from the driving lane, by increasing your speed or cutting in front, it is illegal. The only exceptions to this are, if they are turning left or you are. The driver in the overtaking lane dictates the pace, very annoying but that there is the law!!

The turning left is also an exemption Siobhan!

I think it was probably thought up before we had carparks.......sorry motorways!
It would be for say, driving down O'Connell St, if the left hand lane is moving faster than the right hand lane, it is appropriate to undertake!

It is a shame that it also applies to our motorways! :p
Especially when Newton is dying to be let off the lease up the M1!!!!!! :king:
