John's 09 Project-1275 K-1100 Twin Cam / 16-V conversion

Postby bomber01 » Thu Jan 29, 2009 1:15 pm

1275 K-1100 Twin Cam Conversion .. Shamrock Twinkie .

John’s 2009 Project
Mini 1275 / K-1100 16 valve Twin cam Conversion.
Code name ; Shamrock Twinkie. ( first in Ireland ?)

I have for some time been toying with the idea of fitting a BMW k- 1100 motor bike head which has 16 valves and twin overhead cams to a mini 1275 block thus keeping of the engine block / gearbox and drive train mini . The ultimate aim is to produce a engine capable of up to 160 BHP with the reliability of a modern engine. Now this may seem quite a straight forward conversion but unfortunately it’s not, it needs a lot of careful planning. Some kits are appearing on the market now, but even with these kits a lot of other mods are required.
In this thread I hope to bring you through my build experiences step by step with the help of some photos of the build.
•The Block.
I am going to kick off with the block which is a standard mini 1275 block stripped down bare and chemically cleaned. The block must be modified to suit the k- 1100 head stud holes, this means blanking off some of the old ones and redrilling and tapping new ones, decking of the block,
A rebore of the bores +20,new cam bearings , new core plugs , redrill and tap engine flange
8 mm……. see photo below …. more to follow.

This is a dummy run on the head fitment ensuring all studs line up and
the head to a nice sliding fit on them..

This is a brilliant project ,I know John has put a lot of work into the research of this and it is now time for action , it will be awsome . in this 50th birthday year there are some really mad classics being built and just built in the MCOI , John's 16V , Pauli's mid engined 2.0 Vtec . Starry's Supercharged 'retro' and we have 4 more supercharger conversions booked in . so it will be an interesting year . keep the pics coming john as things move along .

Best of luck with the project John, I know Pat Maher from Waterford was talking about doing something very similar when he is finished with his 1960 mk1 project.

Nice project. Are these engines capable of reliably producing 160bhp?? what, gearbox are you planning to use? SCCR?? What are you going to do with the bonnet when you have 4 webbers on it :) :1icon_cool: , can they be made to fit under the standard bonnet without scoops?

Great seeing sombody starting a project like this, they are not easy, no matter how easy it looks in the magazines :)

good luck :)

I agree, this is going to be pretty mental if I know John. Could you take plenty of photos of the engine work John? It would be a real education to those of us interested in that sort of thing!

Below is is the view from the head surface after skimming.
[IMG:320:240]http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc67/lancasterj/Image011-1.jpg[/img]
Below two 3/8 holes will be drilled and taped here for the oil return from the head to the sump.
[IMG:320:240]http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc67/lancasterj/Image012-2.jpg[/img]
It a slow process but it has to be 100% correct.
