Ok. I need help. I am trying to get my car running so I can get it out to Ger to do a job for me but have had no luck.

The car packed up a few weeks ago while out travelling. In the end it turned out that the distributor was loose and had turned. SInce then we have tried everything but cant get it to run. We have set the timing and the points. We have a good spark from the coil (which I have replaced just in case) and if we hold the rotor arm in the distributor cap while its off the dizzy and give the engine a turn the car will attempt to fire. However with the cap on we are not getting a spark from any of the plugs. I have had 2 other guys look at this who have reasonable engine knowledge and check timing again but still no joy.

Any ideas.

Cracked rotor arm or cracked distributor cap?? :S

The cap is new (I changed it in case) and I have tested the rotor arm for continuity as well as seen it working when I hold it in the cap and turn the engine.

If you get a crack on the arm - the spark can jump!!

Have you checked if you are gettin a spark at any of the plug leads??
Take one and stick a plug on the end!

None of the leads are sparking unless you hold the rotor arm in the cap. You will then see the spark jump the gap at the rotor arm and also at the plug.

With cap in place the coil is fine but nothing at the leads.

A split in the rotar arm could cause a spark jump down the distributor spindle?
Do you have a spare arm?

After all that it was the rotor arm. The stud or rivet that holds on the metal on the top of the rotor arm was shorting through the centre of the rotor to earth. On testing there was no continuity between the centre of the rotor and the metal surface but after scraping the test lead around the inside a little a path for continuity showed (not a dead short). We drilled out the rivet and glued back on the plate. Engine turned first go so I got a new rotor arm and am back on the road.
